Shuli

by Avram Yehoshua

On Sunday, May 11th, 2003 , Shuli gave her life to Yeshua. Shuli is a Jewish neighbor of ours that we have been helping and witnessing to for some time now. Ruti wept as Shuli told Yeshua that she wanted Him to forgive her sins and come into her life. We have been sharing the love of Yeshua with Shuli for almost three years, although it wasn’t until a few months ago that we were able to talk with her about Yeshua being Messiah.

We had taken a film on ‘Jesus’ (in Hebrew), to her and her two daughters, Ofira (27) and Sagit (21). I ordered some pizza and we watched the movie. At the end, the narrator led anyone who wanted to give their life to Yeshua, in a simple prayer. Shuli repeated out loud after him. It was just incredible. And she told us afterward that she intentionally did it in front of the girls and her son, Ae’al. He came in about 30 minutes before the movie was over. Shuli did it so that they would hear her and know that it was good. She didn’t want them to be afraid. (Many Israeli believers are afraid of telling anyone that they believe in Yeshua. They could lose their jobs, their kids could be beaten up, rocks thrown through their windows, homes set on fire, etc.)

Shuli told us that ever since she was a little girl in Jerusalem , when she visited a church as part of a school trip, she was curious about Yeshua. But of course, she kept it to herself. And now she said, after she has come to know us and how open we are about Yeshua, she doesn’t have to do be afraid anymore. Thank You, Yeshua!

The next day we called her to see if everything was alright. Shuli told us that she was very happy. Her outlook on life was beginning to change for the better.

We’re doing a Bible study with Shuli in her home now. There is so much to teach her and so much that she needs to ‘unlearn.’ This way the girls can join in if they want. (By the way, Ofira is married to Amos and they have a two year old son named Ma’or. They live in Netanya which is a six hour bus drive north of Eilat but she was down to visit. Sagit is married to Elan and they live in Eilat.)

Shuli is turning out to be a real ‘evangelist’. She tells just about everyone of her new found faith in Yeshua. And she’s already tasted of the rejection and anger that is common for Jewish believers, from Jews who don’t believe. With that we have comforted her and shown her how to respond to those attacks, and to those who are open.

She’s been reading the Bible that we gave her (a Hebrew Bible, both Old and New Covenants), and she’s read all the Old and is into Luke already. On Tuesday, May 27th, we went over and the Lord led me to Psalm 23 as Shuli was speaking about how poor she is. As we read it, the Psalmist was telling us that because Yahveh was his Shepherd, he lacked nothing (which is the better translation for verse one). It’s not that perhaps he didn’t have all he thought he needed but with Yahveh, he had everything! Shuli spoke of how hard life was. I spoke of how lonely and hunted David was by King Saul but that it was part of Yahveh’s training ground for the young shepherd to learn how to shepherd the House of Israel. Shuli appreciated that.

And then Shuli spoke of the wicked having cars and money, etc. So we went to Psalm 73 where the chief musician of King David, who was also a prophet, had that same problem (that the wicked seem to have ‘everything’ and nothing goes wrong in their lives). But when the Psalmist went to the House of Yahveh, he knew the ‘end’ of the wicked. From there it evolved into a time of sharing our testimony about the Holy Spirit and how needful it is for walking with Messiah. It was very powerful, reinforcing to Shuli the need to reach out to Yeshua for His Touch of Love to her. We were there about three hours and it was divine. We sensed the Lord using us to lead Shuli on.

Shuli is truly just a babe in the Lord and needs much prayer and nurture in the Word but she has just stepped over a tremendous barrier into the Kingdom of her Messiah. And we are looking for the rest of her family to come also as they see Shuli’s life change from one of despair to Joy.
